Keeping a pulse on the popular subjects and content trends within your genre– the ones that can draw views or engagement– is a powerful strategy for planning and adjusting your editorial calendar.
Here's how to do it in Tubular Labs:
Step 1: In Video Intelligence, filter by your vertical(s) of choice within the top-level Video Categories filter drop-down — click the 'Apply Filters' button.
Step 2: With filters applied, click into the Video Insights tab. In the top-level tab drop-down, select “Video Categories.” Now, you’re looking at a breakdown of the other top-level categories that Movies and TV videos have been classified as.
From here, you can scroll down to the results table and click on the arrow next to the category that you want to analyze for more trends.
Doing so will pull up a performance breakdown of its sub-categories, which you can sort by a variety of success metrics to understand potential opportunities.
You can then click on the pop-out icon next to the sub-category to understand top videos, or continue drilling down into other sub-categories. For example, within Humor, you can look further into Jokes and Pranks.
Once you’ve determined a subcategory of interest, you can filter by it and look into Video Insights to understand how factors such as platform, upload day, duration, and others affect the performance of that set of videos as well.
You can also choose the Top Topics insight. Topics and Video Categories are both helpful to describe the people, places, and things within a video to describe what it’s about, but Topics are more granular and are updated frequently to include things like current events. Additionally, while Video Categories are hierarchical, Topics are not, so there is no option to drill down further within Topics.
